Details

The model was created: 1916
A naiad is a water nymph in Greek mythology and she symbolizes the body of streaming freshwater in springs, wells or fountains. She also has sisters that in the same way embody the oceans. It is common for naiads to be connected with a specific spring of freshwater. Carl Milles created many naiads. He was fascinated by all mythological water creatures. He sculpted several fountains depicting these motifs during 1916-1918. Among them a fountain called Little Naiad. The model for this torso is a detail from a version of that figure.
